Section 2: Choosing a Payment Gateway

What is a Payment Gateway?

A payment gateway is an e-commerce application service provider service that authorizes payments for e-businesses, online retailers, bricks and clicks, or traditional brick and mortar. It is the equivalent of a physical point of sale terminal located in most retail outlets. Payment gateways protect credit cards details encrypting sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, to ensure that information passes securely between the customer and the merchant and also between merchant and payment processor.

Advantages of Payment Gateways

  • Merchants can accept credit card payments from customers located anywhere in the world.
  • Customers can pay online with ease and speed.
  • Lets customers know instantly whether their payment has been accepted or not.
  • Protects the store owner from invalid cards.
  • Allows security options such as checking the billing address against the cardholders to eliminate fraud

How Do Payment Gateways Work?

  • A customer places their order on your website.
  • The customer's web browser encrypts the information to be sent between the browser and Delaware.net's server
  • The store then forwards the transaction details to your payment gateway.
  • The payment gateway determines if the card is valid. If it is a valid transaction the payment gateway forwards the transaction to the bank that holds your merchant account.
  • The bank authorizes the transaction and forwards the response to the payment gateway.
  • The payment gateway receives the response, and forwards it on to your store.

What are my choices?

You must choose a payment gateway that is integrated in Store-Logic. Remember, the payment gateway is different than your merchant account, your merchant account can be with any provider.

Below is a list of available payment gateways. We have outlined the costs and requirements of each provider. Consult each company's site for more information.

What if I do not want to use a payment gateway?

If you do not want to use a payment gateway and want to process the cards yourself, you can activate the "Process Payments Inhouse" option in the payment gateway section.

NOTE: This method will not validate or authorize credit cards. All processing must be done manually by the store owner.
