What is Google Analytics?
In March of 2005 Google announced the purchase of a company most web developers know very well called Urchin, they were the worlds leading company in web analytics and Web Statistics Reporting. Urchin is used by more large corporations than any other form of web site tracking software so it was a natural fit for Google, they purchased the company rather than creating their own solution because they needed a better way to prove traffic reporting and results to their main customer base, web site advertisers. Google Analytics helps you find out what keywords attract your most desirable prospects, what advertising copy pulled the most responses, and what landing pages and content make the most money for you.
In this article I am going to show you how to add the Google Analytics “code snippet” to your web page.
Step 1. Most of the customers I speak with regarding Google Analytics do not know that they can actually sign-up for a Google account to personalize Google and the services they offer, that is the first step. Visit http://www.google.com and create an account by left-clicking “Sign in” from the navigation located in the top right-hand side of the browser window and then left click “create an account” from the resulting page.
Step 2. Once you have a Google account, visit http://www.google.com and you will now be able to Sign in or, if you are allready Signed in, left click “My Account”. You will now be presented with a screen that displays a default set of services available from Google; these include Gmail, AdWords, Google Alerts, Google Groups, Web History and iGoogle. I will be presenting more tutorials here on the Delaware.net blog over the next few weeks regarding these services. Selecting the “more” options will show you that I have a lot of tutorials to write for you.
Step 3. Visit http://google.com/analytics and left click the “Sign up” link. You will be presented with a screen that asks you to provide google with your website address, name of the site you are tracking, country and time zone. Select “next” after you have completed this step and add your name, telephone number, country and left click the “continue” option, you must now agree to the Google Analytics Terms of Service by placing a check in the box next too “agree” and then left click the “Create Account” option.
Step 4. Log into your CMS-Logic instance and click on the CMS-Logic tab. From here click on "Google Analytics" in the settings section on the bottom left. Enter your Google Analytics Account Number (ex: "UA-xxxxxx-x") and check the box to "Enable Google Analytics".
Congratulation, you are now ready to start understanding what your web site customers are doing while they are on your web site, how they got to the web site in the first place and why they are leaving. Interpreting all of the reports available from Google Analytics can be overwhelming at first but, should you need assistance Google has included help topics for each section, simply left click the “?” above each report area for an explanation.
